Interview: Joe Zerull (dir. A CADAVER CHRISTMAS) - Part Two

Interview with Joe Zerull
(director A Cadaver Christmas)-
Part 2

[ START WITH PART ONE ]

We're only a few days away from our Fright Night Theatre screening of the zombie horror/comedy A Cadaver Christmas on December 16, so it's time to get into the zombie-killing holiday spirit.

To further jingle your bells and frost your snow man, we bring you part two of our interview with A Cadaver Christmas director Joe Zerull that we started over on The Zed Word - Zombie Blog. In Part One, Zerull describes the origins of A Cadaver Christmas. Now, in Part Two, learn about some of the setbacks that threatened to derail the project.

***
HORROR IN THE HAMMER: The music in A Cadaver Christmas has an amazing grindhouse / spaghetti Western feel. Who was involved in shaping the sound-scape of the film and how did you all work together to get the right sound you wanted for the movie?

JOE ZERULL: The music was a tricky thing for us because our first guy we hired decided to retire before we were even finished filming the movie.  His influences and style fit exactly what I was looking for…you can hear his music in our first teaser trailer we did while we were still shooting the film…it is pretty awesome.

We scrambled to find someone else to fit the bill, which delayed the completion of the film for about a year…but the music was such an important element for us that we knew we couldn't rush it.  We didn't want to just slap in pre-produced music…and we wanted a reoccurring theme in the music throughout the movie as well, and William Campbell provided that for us.

But since we were a smaller budget film, Cadaver was on the back burner for him so we hired another composer, Josh Weitzel, to add in elements and fill in the professor's flashback scenes as well as other pieces including the end credit music. Both William and Josh did incredible jobs on the film, and I think/hope their two different styles blend together seamlessly.

HITH: Hanlon Smith-Dorsey is exceptionally funny and endearing in A Cadaver Christmas. How did he get involved in the short and the feature? In what ways did he put his stamp on the character of Tom?

JZ: Dan [Rairdin-Hale, the star of A Cadaver Christmas] and Hanlon became good friends in graduate school…and I knew Dan from college before that, so when it came time to do another short film for the 48 Hour Film Project, Dan brought Hanlon along. He did an awesome job in the short, and he was very fun to work with.

Hanlon has a very lovable quality about him that just makes you laugh out loud, and Dan did a great job of writing to Hanlon's strengths during that janitor's closet scene.

Hanlon also added a lot of extra depth to his character for the film that better explains the way he is, which we ultimately decided to cutout because it didn't fit very well into the movie…but his performance was great in those cut scenes. Hanlon's stamp is all over this movie, and it goes beyond the character of Tom.

It was very hard to get this film made with the lack of money we had, and if it wasn't for people on set like Hanlon motivating us through the days, helping move equipment, etc. - we wouldn't have ever finished it.

He really needs to be in more films.  The drunk has definitely been the fan favorite in most festival screenings I've attended

HITH: If you got caught in the zombie apocalypse this holiday season, what holiday decoration would you use to defend yourself?

JZ: Probably a stocking full of coal

SYNOPSIS
‘Twas the night before Christmas and all through the Lab, not a creature was stirring, except for the cadavers!

When a biology professor’s Christmas Eve experiment goes horribly awry, it’s up to the university’s janitor to mop up the mess...but dealing with the undead may be a job even the best janitor can’t keep under control

Armed with nothing but oddly effective holiday decorations, the janitor, a cop, the local bartender, and the town drunk must all work together to find the professor, re-kill the cadavers, and save the world...all by Christmas morning. And like every good Zombie Christmas movie, they also learn a little about friendship and the holiday spirit along the way.

Directed by Joe Zerull
Starring Daniel Rairdin-Hale, Hanlon Smith-Dorsey, Yosh Hayas, Ben Hopkins and Jessica Denney

Shock Stock -- Awesome Video Promo Round Up

Shock Stock (April 13-15) -- the horror and exploitation convention set to tear London, Ontario a new one -- might just have some of the greatest convention promo videos ever made.

Embracing the lo-fi imperfections of VHS, the degradation of 16mm and 35mm film reels, and the cheesy and sleazy backroom feel of bootleg movie trades, Shock Stock's latest selection of promo videos give you a pretty good taste of the convention's home-grown, retro, and anti-social way of doing things.

A Message from the Host of Fright Night

This Friday Fright Night presents ...And Then I Helped and Day Zero. 8pm at the Indie Theater of the Staircase Theatre. A message from the host of Fright Night Jay Winger and his first meeting with the folks of MagGot Films.

I first met the crew from MagGot Films at Shock Stock last year in London Ontario.
It all started innocently just sitting down on an uncomfortable chair for the viewing of ….And then I helped. The film was a treat for me, since I’m not a big fan of the Big Budget Horror which time and time again continues to disappoint me.
When the Film was done I was blown away by all the deep meanings of the movie, which I will not get into so I do not spoil it for you. Things that will say about this movie is, it was of the Bizarre and the relation of people were deadly and the Cinematography was awesome in my eyes.

After the film I met up with Jesus MagGot and was blessed by this holy mascot of the film company and chatted it up a little with the director Micheal Maggot about the film and the deeper content of the film that I feel the average Joe won’t understand, but don’t let that deter you from watching this awesome Indie flick, just pay attention and after the movie we’ll get into the depth of it at the showing of Fright Night theatres presentation of …And then I helped with a short showing of Day Zero with a QnA with members of MagGot films.

This month also represents Women in Horror recognition month, The lead Lady of ….And then I helped is the Gorgeous Nikki McIntyre who has told me that this film holds a special place in her heart. Nikki is also well educated in film and special FX and did I mention she is gorgeous? Well yes I did and since this month is also dedicated to deadly love! You need to come out and see what’s so deadly about her characters love in the film.

At the presentation of ..And then I helped, I’m pretty sure we will all be blessed by his presence Jesus James MagGot and the Holy Maggot.

February Fright Night Spotlight: Day Zero

February 3, Fright Night will continue it's annual Valentines tradition of Deadly Love: your Valentines or Anti-Valentines night...depends on how you want to look at it.

February is Women in Horror Recognition Month: "Women in Horror Recognition Month (WiHM) aims to empower people all year long & all over the world to utilize and share their creativity with the intention of giving recognition to women working in all facets of the horror industry." HitH has chosen to show recognition to this event by shining a light toward the local zombie walks...anyone notice a trend? Hamilton, St Catharines, Toronto, Barrie Zombie Walks are all run by females! And pretty amazing ones at that. Honourable mentions go to Austrailia, France, Florida, Pirrsburgh and more. It is undeniable that women everywhere are running this most awesome annual event.

So! In honour of all those amazing women we play the short film Day Zero by Romario Shanchez. The story revolves around Jeff, who has a pretty good life. Great girl, cool car, nice home until one fateful trip to a petrol station everything can change. Especially when the dead have risen. Romario Shorts comes come South Africa teamed with Ant Productions & ITF Films. You can check out more of their work here: http://www.sanchez.co.za/what-we-do/
