Part 5 starts out, referencing back to the original Tommy Jarvis, Corey Feldman from Part 4: The Final Chapter (more like the middle chapter). He is hidden from view in some trees watching two bumblefuck idiots digging Jason out of his grave. As expected, he reanimates! He kills them and walks towards Tommy Jarvis, as soon as he gets to him, the now teenage Tommy Jarvis awakens in a van that is traveling along the backroads near Camp Crystal Lake. Years have passed, and Tommy has never really recovered from his time with Jason Voorhees. He is now a troubled teenager who has to take anti-psychotic medicine in order to not go nuts all over again. Tommy is delivered over as a ward of the state to the Pinehurst Halfway House. He learns pretty quickly that he is going to be given shit at any turn, when Reggie “The Reckless”(Shavar Ross), a young boy whose grandfather is the house cook, jumps out of his closet and freaks him out with a fake spider. Tommy has continued on with the special effects/prosthetic work showcased in Part 4 and almost immediately retaliates and freaks Reckless out with a homemade mask.
We meet the rest of the teenage inhabitants of Pinehurst and the tension is palpable, quite literally. Soon after Tommy’s arrival, Vic (played by Return of The Living Dead’s lovable Mark Venturini) goes postal when a fat kid named Joey tries to offer him some chocolate. Truth be told it is made painfully obvious that Joey is the proverbial thorn in everyone’s side. So when Vic axes Joey, it’s shocking but you get the feeling it’s been a long time coming!
I’m not going to give you the full synopsis, so let us bullet point some of the more memorable moments:
*Debi Sue Voorhees (her real name) as Tina showcasing a pair of the finest breasts to ever grace the silver screen.
*Tiffany Helm as Violet in one of the best dance scenes (more than Robot-o) to one of the best songs of the 80s by Pseudoecho
*Miguel Nunez in his cameo as Reckless’ brother Demon. “Damn Enchiladas!” and crooning back and forth to his lady love as he shits out said enchiladas in the outhouse.
• Ron Sloan and Carol Locatello PITCH PERFECT as ignorant redneck mother and son. Especially Ron as Junior coming back from a run-in he started with Tommy. A sidenote, in person they are the two nicest people from the FT13th cast so far. Miguel Nunez sadly ruined my childhood memories of his by being a cheapskate…but that’s another story for another day…
*The awkward moment where Jake confesses his affections to Robin and she laughs in his face. Bitch gets her just desserts soon after!
*Everyone freaking out on Violet for setting extra place settings for Vic and Joey. Jake stuttering “You don’t set a place for a dead guy!”
*Reckless’ ear curdling scream that happens approximately 70 times throughout the film.
In the end, what is it that just pushes nerds buttons about this film? It’s the ending. When they find out that the Jason that has been chasing everyone around isn’t even Jason at all. It’s Roy, a paramedic from the beginning of the film who helped clean Joey off of the lawn. Turns out that Joey was his son, and he went nuts and tried to, and mostly succeeded in killing everyone at Pinehurst. Most people just brush part 5 off from that fact alone. Another thing that I usually hear the biggest amount of whining from are the blue ball nightmare sequences that Tommy endures as he fights insanity.
What is my response? Get over it. So it wasn’t really Jason. That didn’t stop any of you from liking the first one. It wasn’t a bad film. Hell I like it more than 3,7,8 or 9, and of course 10. And I think it’s as good as 1,2,4 and 6. But what does it matter? It’s just my opinion. And as long as we can come to the consensus that it’s not as bad as everyone makes it out to be, I can handle any rocks you want to throw at it.
